SUMMARY:Building Disaster Resilience for Caregivers (AWR-308)
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Description:\n Indiv
iduals with medical\, functional or access needs are particularly vulnerab
le to natural hazards. Factors such as physical limitations\, mental ailme
nts\, and medication requirements are issues of concern for caregivers. Th
ese specific needs\, amongst other considerations for natural hazards\, mu
st be addressed in preparedness plans for these at-risk individuals. This
course provides healthcare professionals\, emergency medical services\, an
d citizen/community volunteers involved with the care giving of individual
 s with medical\, functional\, or access needs with a basic understanding o
 f natural hazards\, risk\, vulnerability\, and disaster preparedness. The
course will enable participants to discuss best practices to prepare for t
he impacts of local natural hazards\, identify methods of assisting care r
eceivers to prepare for natural disasters and identify appropriate prepare
dness actions to take during a disaster.\n This course will familiarize p
articipants with the science of natural hazards\, best practices associate
d with personal disaster preparedness\, and disaster preparedness consider
ations for those with access and functional needs. Participants will be in
troduced to all three categories of hazards\, but course instruction will
focus on those natural hazards relevant to participants’ local area. Par
ticipants will also be introduced to best practices for personal preparedn
ess prior to a disaster and encouraged to discuss plans and actions that t
hey have already taken. Participants will then explore special considerati
ons for disaster preparedness for dependents and those with access and fun
ctional needs. Finally\, a class activity will be presented to allow parti
cipants to test their ability to prepare and react to a natural hazard.Cou
