EMRA-V: Emergency Medical Response Awareness for CBRNE Incidents—Virtual (PER-271-V)

Overview: Through this course, the student gains knowledge and practical experience in the triage and treatment of CBRNE mass casualty victims. The student reviews the CBRNE threat and associated symptoms of exposure and contamination; on-site and hospital triage and treatment of victims; and performs scenario-based triaging decision games to provide experience in the critical thinking skills required to quickly triage and treat CBRNE mass casualty victims. Below are some of the objectives or topics discussed and performed during this training:

• Identify a biological hazard
• Identify a chemical hazard
• Identify a radiological or nuclear hazard
• Identify an explosive hazard
• Interpret triage tags
• Identify procedures for the SALT (Sort, Assess, Lifesaving Interventions, and Treatment and/or Transport) Mass Casualty Triage Algorithm
• Identify treatment protocols for victims of chemical exposure
• Identify treatment protocols for victims of biological agent exposure
• Identify treatment protocols for victims of radiation exposure
• Identify treatment protocols for explosive blast and trauma victims

Target Audience: This course is for emergency medical responders and clinicians such as nurses and other medical/hospital staff that may work within the warm and cold zones at the performance defensive level in a CBRNE mass casualty incident (e.g., Certified Emergency Medical Technician [EMT], paramedic, student nurse, licensed registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, physician, or other clinicians).

Prerequisites and Requirements: To be eligible to attend this course, a student must possess basic skills in routine triage and treatment procedures. Exceptions to any of the prerequisites may be granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Center for Domestic Preparedness Registrar.
