Our first in the WRAP-EM: Pediatric Disaster Management series!

Chris Riccardi the Manager of Emergency Management and Business Continuity for Rady Children’s Hospital of Orange County. He will be training on Mass Casualty Events, Disaster Scene, and Triage.

Disaster response can be viewed as occurring at several levels. The military might refer to these as the tactical (at the level of the provider), the operational (at the level of the institution) and the strategic (at the level of the system). In this module, we examine the role of the individual provider at the scene of a disaster involving pediatric victims, focusing on mass casualty events, disaster scene, triage and patterns of injury. Learning Objectives:

  • Describe key principles of pediatric mass casualty incident (MCI) response
  • Describe key principles of safety for providers and patients at a disaster scene involving children
  • Explain pediatric disaster triage principles, including the use of SALT, START, and JumpSTART methods
  • Identify considerations for triaging special pediatric populations, including neonates and children with special healthcare needs
  • Recognize the critical role of parents and caregivers in supporting pediatric assessment, monitoring, and emotional stabilization during disaster response
