SUMMARY:Surviving First Amendment Audits and Citizen Journalist Encounters
DESCRIPTION:\n\nTHE CHALLENGE\n\nCop watchers have been active for more tha
n 30 years\, and First Amendment Audits have been on the rise for a decade
. Yet each day\, new videos are posted to social media featuring officers
who appear completely unprepared for the encounters. “Failed” audits u
ndermine public trust in our already embattled institutions and\, too ofte
n\, result in increasingly costly civil suits. All public servants\, peace
officers in particular\, must be equipped with the most current case law\
, the requisite communication skills\, and the right mental attitude\, if
we are to expect them to meet this challenge and uphold the public trust.\
n\nFirst Amendment Auditing has grown into a cottage industry that shows n
o sign of slowing.\n\nWhat do you really need to know?\n\nRECOGNIZE AN AUD
IT\n\nWhat do they look like?\n\nWhere do they take place?\n\nWhat are typ
ical Auditor strategies?\n\nCURRENT CASE LAW\n\nWhich activities are prote
cted?\n\nWhen is camera evidence?\n\nWho may film? Where? When?\n\nWhat is
  a “journalist”?\n\nSTRATEGIES AND TACTICS\n\nWhat to say\, what not t
 o say.\n\nAvoid traps and pitfalls.\n\nRecognize and deflect Auditors’ a
ttempts to provoke.\n\nHow to be better at what you do than they are at wh
at they do.\n\nTHE LATEST INFORMATION\n\nCourse materials are continually
updated as\n\nAuditor tactics evolve.\n\nStudent feedback is incorporated
following each presentation.\n\nHOW\n\nThe seminar consists of a 4-hour\,
in-person\, instructor-led presentation that is organized around the same
research based presentation principles employed by TED Talks. The multimed
ia presentation incorporates both video clips of actual audits and enhance
d student engagement activities. “Death by PowerPoint” will NOT be tol
erated.\n\nAt the conclusion of the training series\, we will provide the
client agency a PDF copy of the full CJSTC compliant lesson plan documenti
ng the material covered.\n\nWe will also provide a PDF copy of our End of
Course Handout\, summarizing the key points of the course\, that the clien
t may print for each attendee\, and a Certificate of Completion for each a
ttendee.\n\nIn addition to the course material that my legal counsel and I
have prepared\, we can set aside a portion of the course to cover any of
your agency’s policies or bulletins that pertain directly to members’
response to auditor activities (ex.\, Trespassing Persons from Public Prop
erty\, Interacting With the Media\, Accessing you Legal Advisor\,etc.)\n\n
