Veterans Day is a U.S. federal holiday on November 11th that honors all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It originated as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, but was renamed in 1954 to recognize all veterans from all U.S. wars. The holiday celebrates living veterans and their contributions, patriotism, and sacrifices.

Origin as Armistice Day:

The holiday began as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I, when fighting ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The first Armistice Day was observed in 1919.
Transition to Veterans Day:

In 1954, at the urging of veterans’ organizations, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars and conflicts. It became an official federal holiday to thank living veterans for their service.
Distinction from Memorial Day:

Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day. While Memorial Day honors those who died in service, Veterans Day is a day to thank all who have served, both living and deceased, with a particular focus on those who are still living.
How it is celebrated:

Communities celebrate by holding parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence, such as the one at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Other ways to celebrate include flying the flag or displaying yellow ribbons, and many people thank veterans directly for their service.
